Editor's Notes:
For all of his Spalding citations M.D. Bown used the error-ridden
1910 LDS edition of the Oberlin Spalding
Manuscript. I have produced a Names & Proper Nouns Table based upon my
personal examination of the Oberlin MS and upon the standardized spellings found in the special on-line
E-text of the Spalding MS (in concordance format). Each
of the names on Bown's list may be quickly checked against its standardized concordance spelling by clicking
on the "(sp)" or "(ok)" following that name. By "standardized concordance spelling" I mean the one, true spelling
in the MS, or the most frequently occurring variant in the MS, since these were also the spelling selected for
the concordance text. The "(sp)" (spelling error) and "(ok)" (matches concordance) links lead to my
Concordance Extract page, wherein all Spalding MS name occurrences and locations are
tabulated. My placing an "(ok)" after a name does not necessarily mean that Bown's definition for that name is
a correct one. I've provided my own definitions in the Extract tabulations.
As can be seen in even a casual glance at the name list, the names of Spalding's characters and proper nouns do
not match those of the Book of Mormon, except in a very few instances (Jesus, Egypt, etc.) However, the recurring
syllable patterns in some sets of Spalding's unique names are rather similar to some recurring syllable patterns
in some Book of Mormon name sets.
For two on-line articles dealing with Spalding's unique names, see Ted Chandler's
Name Construction in the Spalding MS and Vernal
Holley's short paragraph on Invented Names. Holley's
paragraph has been considerably expanded in the third edition of his Book of Mormon Authorship:
A Closer Look, however that printing is not currently available as an e-text. For some rather speculative
views on the derivations and origins of unique names in the Book of Mormon see
Book of Mormon Names.
