The Lost Works of Solomon Spalding

Introduction

In any study of the life and works of Rev. Solomon Spalding (1761-1816) questions naturally arise concerning exactly what works he wrote, when he wrote them, and their ultimate disposition. Besides a handful of letters, notes, and legal documents, only a single copy of one of his manuscripts is extant today. Possibly one or two short articles by the writer exist in the pages of old newspaper collections. And there is a second existing manuscript, the origin of which may ultimately be traced to Spalding, but certainly not its its full content. Beyond that we have only the reports of his relatives and associates that he wrote other things which long ago disappeared. Whether these actually existed or not, I call them "the lost works of Solomon Spalding."

The Oberlin Manuscript

The only manuscript story now accepted by all investigators as being a Spalding original is the so-called "Roman story," currently on file at Oberlin College. Written about 1811-1813, this unfinished romance was first published in 1885, under the title: "The 'Manuscript Found,' or 'Manuscript Story...'" Previous to 1885 Spalding was credited by many as being the true author of the Book of Mormon, but the publication of the Roman story showed it at least was not the source of the "Mormon Bible." The Mormons added to this fact their claim that it was the only story ever authored by Spalding. Their opponents then renewed old claims that Spalding wrote a different work that became the Book of Mormon. These claims and counter-claims continue today and the matter is still far from being resolved.
