Manuscripts Accession 913, Donated 1986 The Dale Broadhurst Papers (1800-1982) contains documents related to the origin of the Book of Mormon and the early history of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Included are photocopies of correspondence, diaries, journals, theses, articles, and news clippings. These documents were compiled by Dale Broadhurst while working toward his Master's degree at the Methodist Theological School in Ohio, Delaware, OH. The primary focus of these papers concerns the similarities between the Book of Mormon and various manuscripts produced by members of the Spalding family between 1810 and 1845, including the Solomon Spalding Ms. on file in the Oberlin College Archives. This collection contains an extensive array of primary and secondary sources, as well as Broadhurst's notes, correspondence, and working papers. Dale Broadhurst donated these papers in 1986. An inventory is available. A separate audio-visual register is also available (the collection's audio cassettes are in the Multimedia Section of the Manuscripts Division (A0315). Content and Scope
These papers are primarily transcripts and photocopies of theses, newsclippings, historical journals, diaries, and other sources relating to the writing of the Book of Mormon and the founding of Mormonism. Included are materials on pre-Columbian voyages to the Americas, American antiquities and the origin of the American Indians. There is some emphasis in the collection to the claims that Native American Indians are descended from the tribes of ancient Israel and that the "Mound-builder" ruins of the northeastern United States were the product of a ancient society originating from either Asia or Europe. Mr. Broadhurst compiled much of this material for his Master's degree, which he completed at the Methodist Theological School in Delaware, Ohio. Included in the collection are his working papers, which comprise his Master's [project] and related notes and correspondence. The collection represents an extensive assemblage of primary and bibliographic sources relating to the claim that Solomon Spalding (1761-1816), former Congregationalist/Presbyterian minister, wrote a manuscript that Joseph Smith later used as the basis for the Book of Mormon... Broadhurst has compiled a list of parallels between the Spalding manuscript and the Book of Mormon. He asserts that previous statements that there was little or no similarity between the two works are inaccurate because inadequate comparisons of the texts were made by earlier researchers. He has concluded that enough similarity exists to warrant further study and reexamination of the question that Joseph Smith may have used the Spalding manuscript as the basis for the Book of Mormon. There is also information on the View of the Hebrews parallelism with the Book of Mormon. The collection also contains a second Solomon Spalding manuscript written by Dr. Solomon Spalding (1796-1862), a nephew of the Reverend Solomon Spalding (1761 - 1816). Some of the themes and writing styles are similar to his uncle's manuscript. It has been speculated that this manuscript is a rewritten transcript from a "lost" or "second" manuscript of Reverend Spalding. This is supported by the fact that the manuscript is in the handwriting of Dr. Spalding's wife, Arvila Ann and is signed "Arvila Ann Harris" on the page preceding page 121. The use of her maiden name indicates that the transcript was made in the late 1820's or early 1830's before her marriage to Dr. Spalding. There are also indications of continued transcription and rewriting made as recently as 1844. However, the greater part of the manuscript most likely postdates Revered Spalding's lifetime. This manuscript, titled the "Romance of the Celes," deals with such things as outer space travel... |
